What the board requires

  • 15 hrsTotal per annual cycle.
  • 4 hrsAnesthesia/sedation administration and monitoring (if applies only to dentists who administer or monitor patients under general anesthesia, deep sedation, or moderate sedation; measured as 4 hours every 2 years), counted within the total.
  • 2 hrsPain management for Schedule II-IV controlled-substance prescribers (if applies only to dentists who prescribe schedule ii, iii, and iv controlled substances; measured as 2 hours every 2 years), counted within the total.
  • RequiredCurrent CPR/BLS certification (basic CPR with hands-on airway training for health care providers, or basic life support; advanced life support required if the dentist holds a sedation/anesthesia permit under 18VAC60-21-290 or -300) (does not count toward CE hours).
One honest caveat. We have not yet confirmed every number against the primary board source, so we are not running an automatic Virginia calculator. We would rather leave it out than guess. Confirm the exact requirements with Virginia Board of Dentistry (Department of Health Professions).

RECONCILER VERDICT: extracted_agree. Extractors A and B independently produced an identical numeric spine and both cite the same PRIMARY state-code source (Virginia Administrative Code, Title 18, Agency 60, Chapter 21 on law.lis.virginia.gov): general CE = 18VAC60-21-250, prescriber CE = 18VAC60-21-106. Agreement across every checked field: cycle (12mo/annual), total (15 hrs/yr), sedation topic (4 hrs, WITHIN, biennial, conditional), opioid/pain topic (2 hrs, WITHIN, biennial, conditional), format caps (none), excluded formats (none), provider (state_approved, non-strict), carryover (max 15), and the CPR/BLS credential. No topic counting is "unclear." Both found:true. WITHIN vs ADDITIVE is unambiguous for both mandated topics and required no guessing: sedation CE is "as part of the hours required for licensure renewal" and prescriber pain-management CE "may be included in the 15 hours required for renewal" - both counted WITHIN the 15. STRUCTURAL NUANCE (agreed by both, not a disagreement): the license renews ANNUALLY (15 hrs/12mo) but both conditional topic mandates are measured on a BIENNIAL sub-cycle (4 hrs sedation every 2 yrs; 2 hrs pain mgmt every 2 yrs). Captured in each topic's triggerLabel. Both topics are CONDITIONAL/trigger-based, not universal - added triggerFlags administersOrMonitorsSedation and prescribesControlledSubstances during assembly (neither extractor s These are the published requirements as we read them, not legal or board advice, and CEChart does not certify compliance.
